Description
* { font:inherit; } Occasionally when my husband and I walk around our property we find a plant or tree growing where there was nothing growing before . . . or growing in the 'wrong place'. We lovingly call these our 'volunteers'. We water them, nurture them, transplant them when necessary and help them grow strong. I am hoping we can find a few volunteers here! All shelters and rescues are in need of volunteers to perform a host of necessary functions that ultimately save lives or at least makes the life of a shelter animal a little bit better. You might think what can I do? I don't want to go into the shelter, it is too depressing or you think you will take an animal home with you when you really don't need another one. There are plenty of ways you can help. Please read the list and if something jumps out at you and says, 'You can do this!' then please contact your local shelter for more information. The contact for the Friends of Madera Animal Shelter will be at the end of this list.Foster--dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, horses. Kitten season will soon be upon us. At the Central Valley SPCA over 1000 kittens were brought in during one four week period last year. These kittens were not weened and had to be bottle fed. Are you a webmaster? Does your shelter have a website? Can you help them with it?Newsletter. Can you spell? Write halfway decent? Fold or staple papers?Pictures--are you a wannabe photographer? Take pictures of either shelter animals or other animals in foster care and post them on the internet--it is a fantastic way to get your homeless pets visible.Do you recycle? Start a recycling venture at your place of work, church, home or whatever. Involve everyone you know. Donate the money to your organization.Hold a rummage sale and donate the proceeds.Does your shelter hold public/special events that you can help at? Can you scrounge up raffle items or ask businesses to donate? Can you bake and sell goodies? Are you an artist and can you donate a piece of art that someone would love to have? Can you hand out literature about the importance of spaying and neutering your pets, volunteer applications or whatever needs to be promoted? Can you go to a Petsmart or Petco with shelter animals and help adopt them out?Can you transport an animal to either the vet or from a shelter to a rescue or their new furever home? Can you take your old blankets or towels to your local shelter? Can you spare some time to read animal educational type stories to children at your local library or school?Do you have children that are in a club like the Boy Scouts or the Girl Scouts? Or even if they aren't in a club they could do either a newpaper drive, recycling campaign, old blankets, towels, or pet food drive. Now you see most of these didn't require stepping one foot in the shelter. But if you CAN go in a shelter:Walk dogs, play with puppies, play with the cats and kittens. The more interaction and socialization they get the better their chances to be adopted. For me, nothing beats a tail wagging dog or a purring feline! And if you just don't have the time, then open up that wallet and either donate outright or offer to sponsor a pet. Sponsorhip varies from shelter to shelter but basically you pay so much a month to house and feed a dog or cat, or you pay for a spay or neuter to improve the chances of an animal to be adopted. You can ask your local shelter for more information. And, please, don't forget to involve your children. It is together time for you, it is good for the animals, it is good for our future, and it is truly rewarding! To volunteer for the Friends of Madera Animal Shelter you can call 559-664-8667. We are waiting for new volunteers to sprout up!The views expressed here are those of katzydogs-rescue@yahoo.com and do not necessarily represent those of the shelter.Save a life/Adopt....Save Thousands/Spay & NeuterTo submit an application for this pet please click here: Adoption Form Follow up with a phone call to be sure your application was received.$95 adoption fee for dogs and $55 adoption fee for cats includes spay/neuter and all vaccines.
